Hi Everyone,

Here’s another Amercian Indian woman sculpture work in progress to share with you. I’ve taken a few pictures along the way to show the progression of her….. She first started out as a demo for a show that I did for my home town’s centennial celebration. Well, actually, she first began as a concept drawing. I like to keep a large ringed drawing pad and draw sculpture ideas in the evening after finishing sculpting.

Here’s a few pictures of the mold that I made for my Luisa sculpture.  I really didn’t have time to take a lot of pictures this time a round but at least I have a few to share.

The sculpture was cut at the ankles so that I could mold the items separately.

Hi friends,

This past month my home town enjoyed it’s 100 year centenniel celebration in the park.  Ron and I shared a booth where he showed his book and I showed sculpture.  It was a beautiful day in the park.  What was a real treat was having some from our congregation there to support us and sit with us near our booth.  Also, Luisa, 90 years of age, the subject of one of my sculptures, came out for the day.  She felt like a star because we were pointing her out as people were looking at the sculpture of her.  :-)

Here’s a few pictures of Luisa that day in the park.

Hi Everyone,

Here’s a quick sketch of Luisa, a close friend that is 89 years old. She’s the sweetest lady that you’ll ever meet.  She is an artist herself and paints beautifully.  She eminates love to all, strangers or dearest friends. I just had to make a clay sculpture of her.  I worked from pictures that I had and memory.  I know it would be better to have her right there, that is for sure.  Now I need to have her come and make some alterations to her body because I have her torso too long and knees to narrow.  Working from life prevents backtracking and reworking the sculpture. :)

Indian Woman Sculpture WIP

The Indian feathers have temporarily been removed, well, actually, they fell off. :-)   I only had placed them on the head just to see if I wanted feathers on her.  I think that I will do them but turn them upside down and add some beads as well in her hair.

The Indian woman’s back view was too husky so I feminized her quite a bit.  Here are some pics showing her prior to adding texture.  Ideally it would be good to create the texture simply from making the forms of the back.  In order to have the soft shades of grey in the shadows of the back, I found that I needed to utilize the brush dipped in water.   This brush is carefully dragged over the surface until I get the forms just right.

Finished Wax for Bronze

Finished Wax for Bronze

This wax is a western woman—my latest sculpture soon to go into bronze.  The foundry poured 2 waxes and sent them to me via UPS.  In the summer, I’d have to go to the foundry and pick up the wax myself for fear they might melt in a delivery truck. :-)   Much work goes into having the waxes finished as seen above.

Indian woman sculpture is coming along nicely. For the past several days I’ve been mourning the loss of my kitty and haven’t felt much like sculpting but yesterday I felt better. I worked on her braids and tried out some feathers in the back of her hair. The feathers need to be fairly thick in order for the casting material to flow through the mold well. More work will be done on braids and feathers.

Here’s an Indian woman (maiden) sculpture in a nativity scene  that I’m currently working on.  I suppose she really isn’t a maiden because she’s given birth but she is young. :-D

The sculpture has a way to go to be finished but I thought I’d share a few pictures of her along the way.  Please let me know what you think.  Comments and questions are encouraged. :-)

The first pic shows an Indian woman quick pencil sketch that I drew back in May ‘08.  I like to sketch in the evenings and come up with new ideas that can be translated into clay.  The theme of this sculpture is close to my heart because of what she symbolizes, that of being rich with a family. Her name is “Wealth.”  To me one of the greatest things that makes a person rich is to have a child.
