Indian Maiden (Woman) Sculpture Update

Indian Maiden (Woman) Sculpture Update

Hi Everyone,

Last week Ron, my hubby, made a rock  base for the Indian woman.  So I decided to take some pics of her on the base since she’s almost finished.  What do you think of the base?  I think that it gives her an earthy feel.  He made the sculpture base out of papercrete which is just concrete with sand and a bunch of shredded paper.  The paper makes the base lighter.

To view pics of her please click here below:

Here’s some before and after pictures of  the Indian woman.  I elongated her and now I think her proportions are more in line with my original drawing.

Even though the hair braid tendrels that are hanging down look to me very nice, they need to be a little less detailed, so I’ve softened them a bit.  I don’t want the eye to focus on them too much.  The tassels on the blanket are very muted and unrefined.  Since these pics were taken the braids tendrils have been softened although not as much as the tassels.

I hope that you like her.  You all are my eyes into what other peope are thinking of her.  I appreciate all your thoughts.  Comments and criticisms are welcomed.

again very good, I love her. A nice change from the others, she looks so passive and unconcerned even about her child, almost as though, “well she’s here now what do I do with her? Maybe if I hold her loose enough the wind will come along and blow her away.” Normally you would see at least the slightest sign of cuddling and in her there is none. Very unique portrayal..lv gram

I agree she looks better with a longer torso. Also the base is nice. I also agree with “Gram” that she seems very aloof to just recently having a child. Who is going to come and take her, I’ve Had enough for a while. I like her, you have done very well.

Your proportions are great! Wish she looked a bit softer towards the baby….All in all, beautiful!

Good work, Tamara, I like it. Proportions and forms are harmonique and very convincing.

One concern: her left braid simply doesn’t look right to me, especially in the middle. Not really disturbing, but it caught my eye.

And I have to agree with gram her pose is very unique. Not the usual mother-child relation, she seems not really being aware of her child, more deep sunk in meditation.

All in all very well done and a nice development. Thanks for sharing.

You all are great. Thanks for your thoughts on her. Everyone’s thoughts are equally important to me. Your honest opinion tells me what others might be thinking too.

Kurt- That spot on the braids that’s jutting out has been adjusted a little bit. I didn’t want complete uniformity but that caught the eye as off.

The expression in her face is blank because I want people to think. I want them to try to read what she’s feeling and her lot in life. Her name is “Wealth. So is she wealthy? She has no clothes but only a baby in a blanket. There are many questions that this sculpture might bring up. I’ll let each person read her as they may. :-)

The Indian woman does have a softer expression than the pictures right here show. When I get some closer pics and from the side view you will see that a bit more.

Thanks again for all your comments.

    ~Tamara

Very nice, Ms. Bonet. I like how the “maiden” seems to be looking right through me. Maybe she’s concentrating on her new life task, or possibly she’s meditating on the great blessing of having a wonderful bundle of joy. Will you be putting this one into bronze? If so, what would a great piece like this set me back? $12K, I bet! ZD

I guess I saw this a little differently than most and that was the face of defiance. “Who are you and are you a threat to me and my baby?” Rose shares your beautiful and stunning works with many of us. I am in awe of your talent and look forward to each project you share.

  8. Tamara Bonet says:

Zoodoc- She will be going into bronze. As for a price on her, we’ll see how the market is going at that time. :-)
Sandy- Thank you for saying those nice things. I always appreciate compliments as it helps me feel that my work is touching people. Your take on her expression is one I hadn’t thought of but that could certainly fit. She looks strong enough to defend her little baby too.

It’s interesting that everyone reads something different into her expression. To me, she has that exhausted, zoned-out new mother look–probably suffering from sleep deprivation. But maybe I’m just superimposing my own memories of motherhood. I can also see a suggestion of the lioness prepared to defend her cub.
